Ruby 1: The Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe

RRUBY is fast-paced and funny intergalactic entertainment the Marx Brothers would be proud of, with slick, splashy high-tech music and effects created by Tim Clark. The music and sound effects are stunning.

On the planet Summa Nulla (the “high point of nothing”) someone is manipulating the media. And Ruby, our hip, tough-talking detective is hired to track down the malefactors.

The Android Sisters perform their satirical speak-songs as Ruby, the galactic gumshoe, encounters some pretty weird planetary inhabitants on her quest for truth and the intergalactic way: The Tookah, with four tentacles, three eyes, a blue mustache and red fez, TJ Teru the archaeologist, Chief Molierre of the Mole People, sneaky little Rodant Kapoor, Angel Lips (the femme fatale of androids) and the Slimeys, genetically engineered assassins.

Originally broadcast around the world in 23 foreign countries: including the CBC, Canada, BBC, England and ABC, Australia.

The Mark Time Award for Best Science Fiction of the Year.

Ruby officially entered Science Fiction’s Audio Hall of Fame for Best Science Fiction of 1982.

Ruby 2: The Further Adventures

R2Two female gumshoes join forces when the original Ruby returns to assist Ruby 2 to sleuth out who has been “windowing” the peaceful, zen-like Bulldada.

Strange “windows” appear in the minds of the Bulldada. Is it an alien presence that is using the Bulldada’s eyes as windows? Is it an insidious device controlled by the electronic media, another way to manipulate the malleable minds of the gullible consumers? The story winds its way through the narrow, dusty streets of Kismet, the Nomadic city, to the fierce desert known as the Great Boosbooszees, to the Ossirian Islands and the delicate glass palaces of the Bulldada.

Filled with bizarre characters and absurd situations, RUBY 2 is like an audio comic strip. It’s definitely the zaniest and funniest of all the Rubys.

Will Ruby defeat the detractors of the truth and protect the perspectives of the credulous consumers, or desiccate in the dreadful desert of the Great Boosbooszees?

Ruby Refreshed, The Complete Series

RR1Tim Clark has completed re-creating the music for Ruby, the Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe. It’s taken a couple years to finish this project. We believe it’s been worth the wait.

Tim didn’t actually change the music, he enhanced it. When Ruby was produced in 1981, we had synthesizers but not computers, not the marvelous musical instruments that can be called forth whenever one desires. Tim kept the original Ruby music and added to it, gave it more zip, more zap, more punch, more pizzazz. He gave Ruby a new life.

Tired of the Green Menace?

RPThis is the very first Ruby story. Ruby Tuesday (that’s what she was called) is hired by a Colonel Abulah Abdullah of the star cluster, Saudi Asteroidia, to find Cleo, a missing planet. The Colonel, a robot, has created a miniaturized replicate of himself to fit into a cigarette case. Whenever Ruby opens the case, the Colonel gives his opinion.

Ruby travels to the planet Dong-A-Long, to confer with a company that can move small asteroids, to see if it’s possible to move a planet. The Dong-A-Longese, all green, are all named Fong, and they all consider themselves detectives. Ruby realizes there’s much more behind this mystery when she encounters the villainous, Forked Forefinger of Fong.

One of the unique things about this first Ruby is she uses real cuss words now and then. It takes you by surprise, it’s hilarious. You’ll hear how Ruby evolved. Besides the Green Menace, there’s also four different pilot episodes. When we decided to do Ruby in short, daily episodes, we did a commercial pilot with disco/rock music mixed nice and hot. In these two pilots, “Rebel from Utopia,” her name is Ruby Starr. The third pilot, we did for an arts grant (which we got), and the final pilot, that none of you have ever heard, is backed by a rock band and produced by Roma Baran (producer for performance artist Laurie Anderson). All of these stories are in Stars & Stuff, except for the last pilot. Laura, the voice of Ruby, is in every story, and so is Tom, the voice of Kapoor. Wait’ll you hear Kapoor, he was really slippery and sneaky back then.

The Android Sisters – Pull No Punches

PUNThese are ‘speak-songs” – the Android Sisters talk their songs. They’re “audio cartoons,” humorouos snapshots of life, liberty, lies and the prusuit of someone else’s happiness. Some of the topics are, “How to make your very own puppet government,” and, “The Free Market for me means the Flea Market for you,” and , “Guess who is the Evil Empire now, Hmmmm?”

A few titles are: “B.B. Brain & the Polecats,” “Hey, Cheese Nose!” “That Man is Dangerous,” “He Knew,” and “Cowboys & Arabs”. It’s Satire with a toothy bite. In fact, some of the words are so outrageous, writer Meatball Fulton decided to keep ZBS free of any direct involvement. He Paid for 100% of the production costs out of his own thread bare pocket. “Better they haul away one person, than the whole blessed organization,” he quipped. Hmm, not a bad idea.

R75MUSTim Clark created a lovely musical score to back the strange and amusing stories the Tookah relates to Ruby in RUBY 7.5, “The Tookah’s Tales.” We suggest you play this as “ambiance” while you are doing other things – answering emails, writing a novel, reading a book, sitting and thinking, or just slowly twiddling your thumbs. It makes a wonderful environment that has a soothing subliminal effect. It’s a full hour of music.
